Electronic Logging Device (ELD)

What is an ELD?

An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) is a piece of technology that connects to a commercial motor vehicle’s engine to automatically record driving time and other hours-of-service (HOS) data.

It helps ensure drivers are complying with federal regulations regarding how long they can drive and when they must rest.

Who is Required to Have an ELD?

Most commercial drivers who are required to maintain Records of Duty Status (RODS) must use an ELD.

However, some drivers are exempt from the ELD requirement:
- Short-haul drivers who operate within a 150 air-mile radius and return to the same location daily (short-haul exemption)
- Drivers who use paper logs for 8 days or fewer within any 30-day period
- Drive-away/tow-away operations where the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered
- Drivers of vehicles manufactured before 2000 (based on VIN)

What are the Regulations?

The ELD rule includes the following basic requirements and regulations:

- Drivers must use an FMCSA-registered ELD to record their Hours of Service.
- The ELD must be electronically connected to the vehicle’s engine to automatically track driving activity.
- ELDs must be able to transfer data to safety officials during roadside inspections (either wirelessly, via USB, or Bluetooth).
- The rule prohibits the use of ELD data to harass drivers and includes safeguards for driver privacy.

What Does an ELD Do?

An ELD Does the Following:

- Automatically records driving time
- Captures engine hours, vehicle movement, miles driven, and location data
- Keeps track of driver duty status (off duty, sleeper berth, driving, on-duty not driving)
- Makes it easier to share logs with law enforcement during inspections
